Why we built CURA: the accounting tool Canadian freelancers actually need

April 15, 2025·4 min read

Every Canadian freelancer reaches a breaking point with their finances. For us, it was a Sunday afternoon before a tax deadline, surrounded by a year's worth of receipts, half-finished spreadsheets, and the nagging feeling that we had definitely missed some TPS claims.

We looked at the accounting tools on the market. They were either built for large teams with complex workflows — or they were so simple they could not handle bilingual invoices, TPS/TVQ extraction, or anything beyond a basic income/expense ledger. None of them felt built for a Quebec or Canadian freelancer specifically.

What we wanted did not exist. So we built it.

Most accounting software is built for accountants. CURA is built for the people who actually do the work.

The problems we set out to solve

After talking to dozens of freelancers and small business owners, three problems came up again and again:

  • Receipt chaos. Photos lost in camera rolls. PDFs buried in inboxes. Physical receipts that fade before you file them. The solution had to be frictionless upload — take a photo, done.
  • TPS/TVQ confusion. Figuring out which part of a receipt is tax and which is the base amount — manually, for every expense — is a time sink most freelancers simply skip. We wanted AI to do it automatically.
  • Missing mileage deductions. Vehicle expenses are one of the most commonly missed deductions for self-employed Canadians. A proper log is required but almost nobody keeps one. We built it in.
  • Data ownership anxiety. With existing SaaS tools, your financial data lives on someone else's servers, in a format you cannot easily export. We wanted to give people full control.

Why AI changes everything

The real breakthrough came when large language models became capable enough to reliably extract structured data from messy documents — receipts in any language, scanned at any angle, with varying print quality.

Before LLMs, OCR-based receipt scanners required clean, high-contrast images and still made frequent errors. Modern AI handles the real world: a crumpled restaurant receipt photographed in bad lighting. An invoice in Japanese. A handwritten note with a total circled in pen.

CURA uses this to do something that felt like magic a few years ago: upload any document, and get back a clean, structured transaction record — date, amount, vendor, category — ready to review in seconds.

What CURA is, and what it is not

CURA is a financial record-keeping tool with AI at its core. It is not a bank. It is not an accounting system for enterprises. It will not file your taxes for you.

What it does is give you a clean, accurate, exportable record of every financial transaction in your business — so that when it is time to work with an accountant, you hand them a spreadsheet instead of a shoebox.

It also generates professional bilingual invoices with TPS/TVQ line items, tracks your business kilometers with CRA-standard rates, and lets you customize categories, fields, and AI prompts to fit exactly how you work.

What comes next

We are actively building. Smart reports, AI analytics, bank statement analysis, and country-specific tax presets are all on the roadmap. We are a small team and we ship regularly — follow along on the blog to stay updated.

If you have feedback or feature requests, we genuinely want to hear from you — reach out directly through the app.
